This notice explains what personal data is processed when you use the TickerNotch macOS application (the “App”), its product pages under bitvibelabs.com/tickernotch/, and its license activation service, and the rights you have under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”). The short version: the App has no accounts, no advertising, no third-party analytics SDKs and no cross-app tracking; your watchlist, positions and settings never leave your Mac; and the App sends a daily usage count, tagged with a random ID your Mac makes up for itself, which you can switch off in one click (see section 5).
TickerNotch and BitVibe Labs are operated by a sole individual (“John”), a natural person resident in Greece, who is the data controller for the processing described here. The competent supervisory authority is the Hellenic Data Protection Authority (dpa.gr/en); you may also complain to the authority of your own EU/EEA country.
Your watchlist, portfolio positions, alert rules, news channels, and all settings are stored locally on your Mac only. The App has no user accounts, no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, and no advertising identifiers.
The content of your slots never leaves your Mac. We never receive which symbols you follow, which positions you hold, which cities you watch, which social accounts you track, which news feeds you subscribe to, or which articles you open. That is a deliberate limit, not an oversight: a watchlist would reveal your financial interests, a weather slot your location, and a social slot your identity. The anonymous counts described in section 5 report how many slots of each kind you use, never which.
To show live information, the App connects directly from your Mac to third-party public services: market-data endpoints, weather services, the RSS/news feeds you configure, and the social platforms whose counters you add. Those providers see the technical data any web request carries (your IP address, user agent, and the requested symbols or feeds) under their own privacy policies. We are not a party to those connections and receive nothing from them.
The App periodically checks for updates against our server (a standard Sparkle appcast at bitvibelabs.com). An update check transmits the App version and standard HTTP request data (including your IP address). Our infrastructure (Cloudflare) keeps short-lived technical logs, and we maintain anonymous, aggregate counters: downloads and update checks per version per day, and how many distinct Macs checked in on a given day.
That distinct count uses a short one-way token our server derives from your IP address and user agent combined with a secret that changes every day. It exists only to avoid counting one Mac twice within a day, it cannot be reversed, and because the secret behind it changes every day it cannot link a Mac from one day to the next. We store no per-user records, no IP addresses, and build no profiles from this data.
The App sends a small report about once a day so we can tell how many people use TickerNotch, which version they are on, and which features are worth continuing to build. It carries no content from your setup and one identifier: a random ID, described below.
What it contains: the App version, your macOS version and Mac architecture, whether the display has a notch, whether the licence is free, trial or paid, and coarse counts of how you have set the App up — for example “4 ticker slots, 2 weather slots, 1 pinned to the menu bar, paged mode, news on one side”.
What it never contains: any symbol, ticker, position, price, city, coordinate, social handle, feed URL, headline, file path, serial number, licence key, e-mail address, or advertising identifier. There is no account, and nothing in the report carries your name or anything read from your hardware.
The random install ID. The first time your copy reports, it makes up a random value for itself and keeps it. That value is not built from your serial number, your hardware, your account, your licence or anything else about you, so it cannot be traced back to you and cannot be matched against your use of any other app or website. It exists for one reason: without it we cannot tell one Mac reporting for a week from seven Macs reporting once, which means we cannot count how many people use the App or whether they keep using it.
Against that ID we keep one small record: the day it first reported, the day it last reported, which version it runs, whether the licence is free, trial or paid, and the country the latest report came from, stored as a plain two-letter code such as US or DE. The country is read at the network edge from where the request arrived, and it tells us which countries TickerNotch is growing in. That is as far as location ever goes: no city, no region, and your IP address is never written to storage. The last-seen date and country are overwritten each time, so there is no diary of what you did on which day.
Switching the statistics off deletes the ID from your Mac. Switch them on again later and a fresh one is made up, so the earlier install is simply never heard from again. Because the record holds no name, e-mail or licence key, we cannot find yours from an e-mail alone. So the App shows your install ID in Settings → About, under the switch, with a copy button: send us that value and we will delete the record it belongs to. Switching the statistics off stops any further reporting straight away.
Turning it off. Open Settings → About and switch off Share usage statistics. The App then sends nothing at all beyond the update check in section 4. We do not degrade the App, nag you, or treat the choice as revocable consent for anything else.
If you prefer to object rather than use the switch, write to [email protected] and we will confirm; the switch has the same effect immediately.
When you activate a paid license, the App sends your license key and a device-derived identifier to our activation service (activate.bitvibelabs.com), which validates the key with the store you purchased from and issues a signed, device-bound activation token. We store the license key’s status and its device binding so the license works and abuse can be prevented. We do not receive or store your payment card details.
Purchases are processed by independent merchants of record and marketplaces — currently Dodo Payments, Gumroad, Polar, and Setapp — each acting under its own privacy policy for the purchase data it collects (such as your email address and payment details). From the store we receive only the license and transaction metadata needed to honour your purchase.
We process update-check and activation data because it is necessary to perform our contract with you (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR: delivering updates and validating the license you bought), and we keep aggregate statistics and abuse-prevention records under our legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) in maintaining and protecting the product.
The usage statistics in section 5 rest on our legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) in knowing how many people use the App and which features to maintain. We consider that interest balanced against your privacy because the reports carry no content and no name, the one identifier is a random value your Mac invents for itself that we cannot trace to a person, we keep a single small record per install rather than a diary of daily behaviour, the data is never combined with another data set, it is never shared or sold, and it can be switched off in the App at any time without losing any functionality. If you would rather we did not process them at all, the switch in Settings → About is an immediate and complete objection under Article 21.
Edge request logs are short-lived and rotate automatically. The daily de-duplication tokens described in sections 4 and 5 delete themselves automatically within roughly three days and are never exported; the daily secret they derive from is never stored at all. The resulting aggregate counters contain no personal data and are kept indefinitely. License records are kept for the life of the license and as long as required for tax and legal purposes.
Under the GDPR you have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection, exercisable by emailing [email protected]. Note that for most of the App’s operation we hold no data about you at all; for license records, we will honour requests to the extent the law allows while a license remains active.
The App is not directed at children and we do not knowingly process children’s data.
We may update this notice; the date at the top reflects the latest revision. Material changes will be announced on this page before they take effect.
